Which Hawaiian Style is right for you?

nine bottles, three jobs.

Hawaiian Style makes nine bottles, and they do not all do the same job. Four are for colour, three are for protection, and two are for the evening after. Most of the questions we get about the range come down to one bottle being asked to do another bottle’s job — so here is the whole shelf, sorted by what each one is actually for.

For colour: the four tanning bottles

Two decisions pick the bottle: oil or lotion first, then sweet or green.

Decision one: oil or lotion

The two oils are SPF 2 and go on as a thin, clear film — the easiest format to apply evenly, which matters because most patchy tans are patchy application. The two lotions are SPF 4 and sink in; the plain Tanning Lotion dries matte, so it will not print onto a towel or a car seat. The longer version is in tanning oil or tanning lotion?

Decision two: sweet or green

The range runs two scent families. Sweet gourmand is coconut first, then caramel; the Coconut Tanning Oil adds a darker note underneath that reads closer to coffee. Green aromatic is fresh and herbal, closer to crushed leaf than to anything sweet, and it stays that way as it warms instead of turning sugary.

Two things that catch people out. The Glitter lotion carries a fine mica shimmer, so shake it first and spread it thin — pearl pigment shows streaks more readily than a plain lotion does. And the plain Tanning Lotion contains coconut oil but does not smell of it: the coconut is there to condition the skin, and the scent is green. If coconut is the smell you want, it is the Coconut Tanning Oil or the Glitter lotion.

For protection: the three Sunblocks

The number on the front is the UVB rating. The PA mark is the UVA rating, on the scale that runs from PA+ to PA++++. A higher SPF lets less UVB through, but the steps get smaller as the number climbs:

BottleUVB filtered, at the tested amountUVAMade for
Sunblock SPF 15≈ 93%PA++A normal day — the commute, lunch outside, an errand
Sunblock SPF 35≈ 97%PA++A long day outside, and the right bottle for most people
Sunblock SPF 50≈ 98%PA+++The top of the UV scale — boat days, midday, the motorbike

Those percentages assume the amount laboratories test with: 2 mg per square centimetre, which is about 30 ml — a full shot glass — for an adult body. Most people put on far less than that, and the shortfall costs more protection than the gap between any two of these bottles. More in what SPF do you actually need?

Two details worth knowing. The SPF 15 is the only bottle in the range carrying both Tinosorb filters, M and S, alongside zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — a broader UVA spread than its number suggests. And the SPF 50 carries a tested water-resistance figure: 40 minutes, measured at the MUPY Dermocosmetic Testing Center, Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University. That is a measured limit, not a promise, and it resets the moment you towel off.

After the sun: gel or lotion

The aftercare pair splits the way skin does at the end of a beach day — hot, or dry, and often both.

  • Aloe Gel, 200 ml. A light water gel with no oil phase, so it feels cold going on and dries without a film. Panthenol, chamomile, allantoin and aloe. Keep it in the fridge — the cold is the point.
  • After Sun Lotion, 100 ml. A richer emollient lotion built on jojoba oil, with chamomile, allantoin and vitamin E, for putting the skin barrier back after a long day rather than just cooling it.

Plenty of people use both: the gel first for the heat, the lotion afterwards for the dryness. The order is laid out in the after sun ritual.

Three ready-made combinations

  • The weekday. Sunblock SPF 15 every morning on face, neck and arms. Step up to the 35 for anything longer than an errand.
  • The beach day, tanning. Sunblock SPF 35 or 50 on face, ears, chest and shoulders; one tanning bottle on the skin you are colouring; the Aloe Gel when you come in.
  • The beach day, not tanning. Sunblock SPF 50, reapplied every two hours and straight after every swim, then the After Sun Lotion that evening.

Every bottle above has its own page with the full ingredient panel and its Thai FDA (อย.) notification number. When you know which one you want, here is where to find it.
