Aloe Gel

cool, calm, hydrate.

The cold one. A light water gel that goes on and takes the heat out of skin immediately — the bottle people reach for first when they come in off the beach.

What it is

A water-based gel thickened with Carbomer — no oil phase at all, which is why it feels cold going on and dries without a film. It carries Panthenol (provitamin B5), chamomile extract, allantoin and aloe.

Keep it in the fridge. The cooling is the point, and a cold gel on hot skin does more for how you feel in that moment than any ingredient on the list.

How to use it

  • Cool rinse first, pat dry, then apply while skin is still slightly damp.
  • Reapply as often as you like — there is no oil to build up.
  • Follow with the After Sun Lotion if skin is dry as well as hot. Gel for the heat, lotion for the barrier.
  • Do not use on broken or blistered skin.

What is in it

Twenty-one ingredients, and mostly water. Two of them are worth explaining before anyone asks.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice
The aloe. Worth being straight about what it does: the evidence for aloe healing a burn faster than a plain moisturiser is weak. What it reliably does is bind water at the skin surface and feel good doing it. We go through the research in the after sun article.
Panthenol
Provitamin B5 — a humectant and skin-conditioning agent, and one of the better-supported ingredients in this kind of product.
Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract
Chamomile extract, for its soothing reputation on irritated skin.
Carbomer · Triethanolamine
The gel network and the base that neutralises it. Together they are what makes this a gel rather than a liquid.
Glycerin · Butylene Glycol · Allantoin
Humectants and a soother — they hold water against the skin as it dries.
CI 19140 · CI 42090
Colourants — a yellow and a blue, which together make the green. The colour is dye, not chlorophyll from the aloe. Purely cosmetic.
Imidazolidinyl Urea · Phenoxyethanol · o-Cymen-5-ol
The preservative system. Includes one formaldehyde-releasing preservative — flagged for anyone who avoids them.

Always read the bottle. This is a cosmetic for external use. Formulations and packaging are updated from time to time, so the ingredients panel on the bottle you receive is the authoritative one. Patch test first if your skin is reactive, and stop use if irritation develops. Not medical advice. If you have a skin condition, a burn that blisters, a mole that is changing, are pregnant, or are treating a young child, please talk to a doctor. Full detail in our terms of sale.
