After Sun Lotion

stay cool.

The richer half of the aftercare range. A proper lotion rather than a gel, for skin that has been out all day and needs the barrier put back rather than just cooled down.

What it is

UV damages the skin barrier, water escapes faster than usual, and dried-out skin peels — taking the colour with it. This is the bottle for that: an emollient lotion built around Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, with chamomile extract, allantoin and both forms of vitamin E.

It is a lotion, not a gel, so it does more for dryness and less for the immediate cooling sensation. If you want the cold-on-hot-skin feeling, the Aloe Gel is the other half of the pair — plenty of people use the gel first and this afterwards.

How to use it

  • Rinse cool first — not hot. Hot water strips an already stressed barrier.
  • Pat dry and apply while skin is still slightly damp. That traps the water still on the surface instead of letting it evaporate.
  • Go again before bed, and again the next morning. One application is not a repair.
  • Do not scrub, shave or pick at peeling skin.

What is in it

Twenty-seven ingredients. Two of them matter more than the rest for anyone with allergies — read the note below before you use it.

Arachis Hypogaea Oil
Peanut oil. A skin-conditioning oil, and a serious allergen for some people. See the allergen note below.
Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil
Jojoba — technically a wax ester, close to the skin's own sebum, which is why it absorbs the way it does.
Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract
Chamomile extract, long used for its soothing reputation on irritated skin.
Allantoin · Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice
Soothing and skin-conditioning — the aloe here sits alongside the oils rather than carrying the formula.
Tocopheryl Acetate · Tocopherol · Retinyl Palmitate
Vitamin E in two forms, plus a vitamin A ester. Antioxidant and conditioning.
Isopropyl Lanolate
A lanolin ester. Excellent emollient — and lanolin is a well-known contact allergen for a minority of people.
Methylparaben · Propylparaben · Imidazolidinyl Urea · 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol
The preservative system: two parabens plus two formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. This is the oldest formula in the range and it shows here — flagged so you can decide for yourself.

Always read the bottle. This is a cosmetic for external use. Formulations and packaging are updated from time to time, so the ingredients panel on the bottle you receive is the authoritative one. Patch test first if your skin is reactive, and stop use if irritation develops. Not medical advice. If you have a skin condition, a burn that blisters, a mole that is changing, are pregnant, or are treating a young child, please talk to a doctor. Full detail in our terms of sale.
