Sunblock SPF 50

stay out longer.

Our highest protection: SPF 50 with a PA+++ UVA rating, built for the hours nobody sensible spends outside. Mineral and organic filters work together so the layer stays light enough that you will actually put enough of it on.

What it is

A face and body lotion for the top of the UV scale — the boat day, the midday walk, the motorbike, anywhere the index is sitting at 8 or above. SPF 50 filters roughly 98% of UVB, and the PA+++ mark covers UVA — the wavelength behind ageing and pigmentation — on the Asian scale that runs from PA+ to PA++++.

The formula runs two mineral filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — alongside four organic ones. Minerals alone at this strength tend to sit heavy and white; pairing them keeps the layer thin enough to spread properly. That matters more than it sounds: lab SPF is measured at 2 mg per square centimetre, and most people apply between a quarter and a half of that. A lotion you are willing to use generously beats a higher number you ration.

How to use it

Water resistance was tested at the MUPY Dermocosmetic Testing Center, Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University, at 40 minutes. That is a measured limit rather than a promise: it is the point at which the tested protection is still holding, and it resets the moment you towel off.

  • Apply before you go out — on dry skin, a few minutes before sun, not at the water's edge.
  • Use more than feels natural. Roughly half a teaspoon for the face and neck; about 30 ml — a shot glass — for a whole adult body.
  • Reapply every two hours, and straight after swimming, sweating or towelling off.
  • Do not forget the edges — ears, back of the neck, tops of the feet, and the parting in your hair.
  • Pair it, do not mix it. If you are using tanning oil, the SPF goes on the skin you are protecting; the oil goes where you are deliberately colouring.

What is in it

Everything that goes in, in the order it goes in. A few of them are worth explaining, since most of this list is chemistry rather than plain English.

Zinc Oxide · Titanium Dioxide
The two mineral filters. They sit on the skin and scatter UV rather than absorbing it, and they cover both UVA and UVB.
Octocrylene · Ethylhexyl Salicylate · Homosalate
Organic UVB filters. They do the bulk of the burn protection and keep the texture light.
Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol
Easier to say as Tinosorb M — a broad-spectrum, photostable filter that covers UVA as well as UVB. It is a large part of why this carries a PA+++ mark.
Cocos Nucifera Oil · Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
Coconut oil and a light coconut-derived emollient. They carry the filters and stop a high-SPF layer feeling like paint.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice · Allantoin
Skin-conditioning and soothing. Not sun protection — they make the layer more comfortable to keep on.
Tocopheryl Acetate
Vitamin E, an antioxidant that also helps keep the oil phase stable.
Phenoxyethanol · o-Cymen-5-ol · Ethylhexylglycerin
The preservative system. No parabens and no formaldehyde-releasing preservatives in this formula.
Parfum
Fragrance. It is what makes it smell like a Hawaiian Style bottle — and it is the ingredient most likely to bother genuinely sensitive skin.
