Sun & SPF
Everything about sun protection — what SPF means, how often to reapply, who can use it, and where to keep the bottle when you’re not.
What does SPF mean?
SPF mainly refers to protection against UVB rays, which are the rays strongly linked with sunburn. SPF 15 filters about 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 about 97%, and SPF 50 about 98%, when used correctly. (The Skin Cancer Foundation)
Is SPF50 much stronger than SPF30?
Barely. SPF 30 filters about 97% of UVB and SPF 50 about 98% — roughly one percentage point, for a number that looks almost twice as big. No sunscreen filters 100%. How much you apply and how often you reapply both matter far more than the jump.
The full maths. (American Academy of Dermatology)
How often should I reapply sunscreen?
Every two hours outdoors, and immediately after swimming, sweating or towelling off — a towel takes a surprising amount of it straight back off. (American Academy of Dermatology)
How much sunscreen should I apply?
About 30 ml — a shot glass — for a whole adult body, and roughly half a teaspoon for the face and neck. Guidance varies slightly: the AAD phrases the face dose as a teaspoon, or a line of product down your index and middle fingers. Err generous either way, because the gap between enough and not enough matters more than the number on the bottle.
Why that is. (American Academy of Dermatology)
Should I apply sunscreen before going outside?
Yes — on dry skin, about 15 minutes before you go out, so it settles into an even film. Applying at the water’s edge means much of it washes off before it has done anything. (American Academy of Dermatology)
Does sunscreen protect from UVA and UVB?
Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB. UVA is linked with premature skin aging, while UVB is the primary cause of sunburn. (American Academy of Dermatology)
Is Hawaiian Style sunscreen waterproof?
No sunscreen is, and none is allowed to say so — the US FDA retired “waterproof” and “sweatproof” from sunscreen labels in 2011 because neither is achievable. What a product can carry is a tested water-resistance time of 40 or 80 minutes. That is a limit, not a promise, and it resets the moment you towel off. (American Academy of Dermatology)
Is Hawaiian Style Sunblock suitable for face and body?
Yes. All three Sunblocks —
SPF 15,
SPF 35 and
SPF 50 — are 100 ml face-and-body lotions. On the face use about half a teaspoon, and do not skip the edges people always miss: ears, the back of the neck, and the parting in your hair.
Is it suitable for all skin types?
They are made for general use, but skin reacts differently person to person. Every bottle’s full INCI list is printed on its product page, so you can check it against anything you already know you react to before you buy. If your skin is reactive, patch test on a small area first. All nine products contain fragrance, which is the single most common trigger.
Can children use it?
For babies under six months the AAD advises shade and covering up rather than sunscreen, and asking a doctor first. For older children, use as directed and reapply far more often than feels necessary. Worth knowing for a family bag: our
After Sun Lotion contains peanut oil, so skip it and ask a doctor if anyone you are packing for has a nut allergy. (American Academy of Dermatology)
Can pregnant women use it?
Sun protection matters more during pregnancy, not less — melasma, the patchy darkening across the cheeks and forehead often called the mask of pregnancy, is considerably more common then, and UV is what drives it. On whether a particular product suits you, the right person to ask is your doctor or pharmacist, who knows your history; what we can do is make that conversation a useful one. Every product’s complete ingredient list is published on its product page, so you can take the actual formulation to them rather than a brand name. If you would prefer to lean mineral,
Sunblock SPF 50 and
SPF 15 both carry zinc oxide and titanium dioxide alongside their organic filters, and every bottle in the range contains fragrance, which is worth mentioning if your skin has become more reactive.
Can I use it around the eyes?
Avoid direct contact with eyes. If product gets into the eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Does sunscreen expire?
Yes. A sealed Hawaiian Style bottle keeps for three years from the date of manufacture. Once you have opened it, use it within six months — air, water and whatever is on your hands all get in from the first use, and the filters do not last indefinitely once that starts. Heat shortens both figures: a bottle that has spent Thai afternoons in a parked car or a motorbike box is not delivering the number on the label, however recent the date. Any change in colour, smell or texture means replace it, whatever the date says. (American Academy of Dermatology)
How should I store sunscreen?
Store in a cool, dry place and avoid direct sunlight or high heat. AAD notes that leaving sunscreen in direct sunlight or hot environments, such as inside a car, can speed up ingredient breakdown. (American Academy of Dermatology)
Tanning oil & glow
The brand soul. How tanning oil works, how to pair it with SPF, when to come back inside, and which oil suits which mood.
What is tanning oil for?
Conditioning, and an even colour. Oil spreads to a thin, even film, which is why an oiled tan comes out less patchy — most uneven tans are uneven application. What it is not is sun protection: at SPF 2 roughly half the UVB still reaches your skin.
How to apply it properly.
Does tanning oil make skin tan instantly?
No. Hawaiian Style tanning oil is not an instant self-tanner. It is used while sunbathing to support a golden tan from sun exposure.
Can I use tanning oil instead of sunscreen?
No. At SPF 2 about half the UVB still reaches your skin, and at SPF 4 about a quarter does — neither is protection. Run two bottles with two jobs: real broad-spectrum SPF on the skin you are protecting, oil on the skin you are deliberately colouring.
The two-bottle system.
Can I apply SPF50 first, then tanning oil?
Yes, you may apply sunscreen first for protection, let it absorb, then apply tanning oil on top. However, sunscreen may slow tanning because it reduces UV exposure. Reapply sunscreen regularly as directed.
Will sunscreen make me unable to tan?
No — it slows the dose rather than blocking it, and no sunscreen filters 100% of UV. In practice almost nobody applies the full tested amount, so real-world protection is lower than the label anyway. A slower tan is also a more even one that lasts longer, because you are not peeling it off a week later.
The field guide. (American Academy of Dermatology)
How long should I sunbathe?
There is no honest fixed number — it depends on the UV index, your skin, the time of day and what you have on. What we can give you is the method: start much shorter than you think on day one, go out early or late rather than at midday, build up across days, and stop before your skin feels hot or tight. Pink is not the start of a tan; it is a burn that already happened, and it will not reach full colour for another twelve hours. Check the
live Bangkok UV reading before you go.
Is tanning safe?
UV tanning is a sign of skin reacting to UV radiation. AAD states there is no safe way to tan and that every tan damages skin. (American Academy of Dermatology)
Can I use tanning oil on my face?
We would rather you did not. Our advice across the whole range is that the face gets real broad-spectrum SPF, not oil — facial skin is thinner, burns first, and is where sun damage shows earliest. Oil on the face is also more likely to cause trouble if your skin is acne-prone or oily.
The full method.
Will tanning oil stain clothes?
Oil transfers to fabric, so give it a few minutes to absorb before anything light-coloured touches it, and expect a towel to pick some up. The
Tanning Lotion absorbs matte and is the one to reach for if that bothers you.
Does Coconut Tanning Oil smell like coconut?
Yes — coconut first, then caramel underneath it, then coffee as the dry note that keeps it from turning sweet. The caramel warms as the oil heats on your skin. It is the smell most people mean when they say a beach smells like a beach.
More on how it smells and feels.
What is the difference between Coconut Tanning Oil and Classic Tanning Oil?
Same light mineral-oil base, same single UV filter, same SPF 2. Three ingredients separate them: the
Coconut carries Cocos Nucifera Oil and C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, while the
Classic uses PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil instead. In practice you are choosing on scent — Coconut is the coconut-caramel-coffee one, Classic is a green aromatic: crisp and herbal rather than sweet. Both ingredient panels are on their product pages.
Buying & shipping
Ordering direct from this site is not open yet — for now, buy a bottle in a shop or from one of our official marketplace stores. Here is where to find a bottle, and what the direct-order and returns policy will be when it opens.
Where can I buy Hawaiian Style?
In more than 14,000 shops across Thailand. The big ones are
7-Eleven,
Tops,
Gourmet Market,
Foodland,
Best Supermarket,
Friendship Supermarket and
Central, plus the department stores and malls —
The Mall,
Siam Paragon,
Emporium,
EmQuartier,
Emsphere,
ICONSIAM,
MBK Center and
Terminal 21 — and a great many local pharmacies.
Lotus’s is coming. Online we have official stores on
Shopee (Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines),
Lazada Thailand and
TikTok Shop. The full directory with direct links is on our
where to buy section. Ordering direct from this site is not open yet; when it is, this is where it will happen.
Is it available in every 7-Eleven?
Not every branch. 7-Eleven stocks us where sun care actually sells, so the range is widest in the
beach and coastal areas, across the
South, and in
Bangkok. Inland and upcountry branches carry it less consistently, and the selection varies by store even within those areas — a branch may have the tanning oil but not the SPF 50, or the other way round. If you are after a particular bottle, the surest route is one of our official online stores on
Shopee, Lazada or TikTok Shop, or
ask us and we will point you at somewhere near you that has it.
Do you have retailers in UAE / Malaysia / Singapore / Philippines?
Three of those four, yes. We run official
Shopee stores in
Singapore,
Malaysia and the
Philippines, so you can order locally rather than pay international shipping from Bangkok — links are in our
where to buy section. We also sell through
TikTok Shop. The UAE we do not have a channel for yet;
tell us you are there and we will let you know the moment that changes. Physical retail outside Thailand depends on distributors and shifts from time to time, so it is worth asking us rather than trusting an old list.
Can you ship internationally?
Not yet — online ordering is not open on this site. When it opens, international orders will work by quotation rather than an automatic price, because courier cost varies too much by country and weight to quote honestly in advance: you send us your cart and address, we work out the real cost by hand and email a quotation within about 24 hours, and only then does a payment link follow. Whether we can reach a particular country depends on the courier and that country’s rules on importing cosmetics, so if you have somewhere specific in mind,
ask us and we will check it for you.
Why is international shipping expensive?
Cost depends on destination, parcel weight, courier and fuel surcharge — sun care is liquid and heavy for its size, which is the main driver. Budget separately for customs: you are the importer of record, so any duty, import tax or handling fee charged by your country sits on top of our quotation and is not something we can collect or predict for you. Some countries also restrict cosmetic imports, which is worth checking before you order.
How long does delivery take?
Online ordering is not open yet, so nothing ships from this site today. The policy once it does: within Thailand, shipping starts at ฿50, and the exact figure for your order is shown at checkout before you pay. We pack and hand orders to the courier within 1–3 business days of confirmed payment and email you a tracking number on dispatch. After that transit time is the courier’s, and any estimate is an estimate rather than a guarantee.
My Beach Bag is empty. Where did it go?
The bag lives in your browser rather than in an account, and it keeps for seven days from the last time you changed it. After that it clears itself. Because it is stored on the device you were using, it will not follow you to a different phone or computer either, and clearing your browsing data clears it too. Nothing is lost that cannot be put back — and while direct ordering is closed, the bag is a wishlist rather than an order.
Can I return or exchange the product?
For anything bought in a shop, returns go through that shop under its own policy. For orders placed directly with us — once direct ordering opens — the Direct Sales and Direct Marketing Act B.E. 2545 gives you seven days from receiving the goods to cancel. The Act requires written notice, so email
contact@sahatavesin.co.th with your order number and a statement that you are cancelling; a phone call is not enough. Return the item unopened with its seal intact, since an opened cosmetic cannot be resold, and we refund to your original payment method within fifteen days. You pay return postage unless the item was faulty or wrong. Full wording in our
terms of sale.
Product arrived damaged. What should I do?
Email
contact@sahatavesin.co.th within 7 days of delivery with your order number and a photograph of the problem, and we will replace it or refund it in full — including the cost of sending it back. You never pay return postage for our mistake. This covers anything damaged in transit, faulty, past its shelf life or simply not what you ordered, and it is separate from the 7-day cancellation right above. If you bought from a shop rather than from us, take it back to them first — but tell us anyway, because we want to know.
