Can you still tan with sunscreen on?

yes. here is the catch.

This is the question we are asked more than any other — in the shop, in the DMs, and in three separate places on our own FAQ. The short answer is yes, easily. The longer answer is the single most useful thing we can tell you about getting colour, so it is worth five minutes.

Why the answer is yes

No sunscreen filters everything. SPF 30 stops roughly 97% of UVB and SPF 50 roughly 98% — real protection, but not a wall. Some UV reaches your skin through any sunscreen ever made, and melanin production responds to the UV that gets through.

Then there is the part nobody mentions. Every SPF number on every bottle is measured in a lab at 2 mg per square centimetre of skin, and studies of how people actually apply it consistently find a quarter to a half of that — often around a third. Protection does not scale politely with the thinner layer either. So the SPF 50 on your shoulders is very likely performing like something considerably lower.

The trade you are actually making

Sunscreen does not switch tanning off. It slows the rate. That means the same colour arrives over more days instead of fewer — and that is the good outcome, not the compromise.

A fast tan and a burn are the same dose arriving too quickly. Burned skin peels, and the pigment lives in the cells that come off, so the fastest route to colour is also the fastest route to losing it. A slower tan is more even, sits on intact skin, and is still there in a fortnight. It is genuinely worth saying plainly: sunscreen tends to improve the tan you end up with, not just the skin under it.

SPF first, then oil — the order matters

The other version of this question is whether you can wear both. You can, and the sequence is not arbitrary.

  1. Clean, dry skin first. Oil applied over damp skin beads and dries in streaks.
  2. Broad-spectrum SPF on the skin you are protecting — face, ears, back of the neck, chest, shoulders, the tops of your feet. Give it a few minutes to settle into a film.
  3. Oil on the skin you are deliberately colouring, and only there. Arms, legs, back. Keep the two products on separate territory rather than layering one over the other on the same patch.
  4. Reapply both every two hours, and immediately after any swim or towel-dry.

Layering oil directly on top of sunscreen on the same skin is not dangerous, but it is pointless: you are diluting and disturbing the film you just applied, on the one area you had decided to protect. Two products, two jobs, two territories. The full application method.

And the part we are obliged to say

We sell tanning oil, so you should weigh this accordingly — but we are not going to print something we know to be false. A tan is the skin producing pigment in response to UV damaging the DNA in its cells. Dermatological bodies are consistent and unanimous on this: there is no safe tan. The colour is the visible record of an injury and the repair that followed it.

That does not make the question in the title pointless. It reframes it. You are not choosing between a safe tan and an unsafe one. You are choosing how much damage to accept for the colour, and sunscreen is the lever that lowers the number without taking the colour away. Anyone who tells you the lever does not exist is selling something, and so is anyone who tells you the damage does not.

If you want colour and no damage at all

Then the honest answer is a self-tanner, which involves no UV whatever. We do not make one, and we will not pretend that is a reason to avoid it. For anyone whose skin always burns and never tans, that is not a consolation prize — it is the only route to the result you wanted.
